- AZLoop - Arizona's SpaceX Hyperloop Competition Team
Transportation
AZLoop was a collaborative university-led team created to design and build subscale prototype pods for the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition. The initiative brought together over 100 undergraduate and graduate students from Arizona State University (ASU), Northern Arizona University (NAU), Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and the Thunderbird School of Global Management. The multidisciplinary team was comprised of students specializing in science, engineering, and business, with mentorship from faculty and industry advisors. The project started in 2016, with students preparing for Elon Musk's international competition to develop a high-speed transportation system. In 2017, from an initial field of over 1,300 teams, AZLoop was selected as one of 24 finalists to advance to the competition weekend. During the second competition in August 2017, AZLoop placed in the top eight among 35 teams, successfully passing all functional tests. Although they did not get a final run in the test tube due to time constraints, the team was recognized for its competitive performance as a first-year entrant. The team's pod design featured a levitation system with Halbach arrays of Neodymium permanent magnets, aluminum wheels for low-speed support, and magnetic eddy current brakes. A key advantage for the team was its unique access to a 150-foot open-air test track and a vacuum chamber on ASU's Polytechnic campus, facilities that were rare among competitors. The team continued to refine its pod for subsequent competitions, focusing on aspects like reducing weight with carbon fiber materials for the 2018 event. The project was funded through donor support and provided students with hands-on engineering and business development experience.
