ZipSit operated as a mobile-first personal sitter management system, targeting parents in need of a streamlined process for childcare. The platform was conceived to address common inefficiencies parents face, such as finding, scheduling, and paying babysitters. ZipSit launched its application in 2016 and secured a total of $816,000 over two seed funding rounds, with investments from Coplex. The business operated through a free mobile application that allowed parents to connect with, manage, and transact with a network of trusted sitters. The core of the service was to build a network based on friend-to-friend referrals, allowing parents to view and book sitters trusted by their social circle. The platform's revenue model was not based on charging parents or sitters for the basic connection and scheduling service. Instead, all payments for babysitting services were handled directly through the app, which calculated the duration of the sit and the pre-determined hourly rate, then automatically charged a saved credit or debit card. This automated payment system eliminated the need for cash and negotiations. The ZipSit app offered several distinct features. A key component was the "SitScore," a proprietary rating system that provided parents with a detailed assessment of a sitter's experience and performance. Parents could search for local sitters, view their profiles, and add them to a 'favorites' list. The app facilitated communication by allowing parents to initiate interviews, including voice or video calls, before booking. For booking, a parent would send a request to their chosen sitters with details on the date, time, and rate, and receive a notification upon acceptance. The company ceased operations on March 25, 2020, citing concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
